A scam asking you to verify you’re human has been circulating, and UAB IT’s security team is warning you to be careful about such scams, that might pop up in a browser or web page.
So-called “click-fix” scams can prompt you to follow steps that include copying and pasting text that actually holds hidden code that can download malware onto your device.
“We’ve had a couple of these sophisticated attacks this week,” said Jerry Smith, associate director for information security operations. “We’re asking campus to be vigilant against these types of attacks.”
The sites that caused issues have been blocked from campus, but users might still see them when off campus, Smith said.
To avoid “click-fix” scams:
- Do not copy and paste commands from unfamiliar sources.
- Close suspicious windows and unexpected popups immediately.
- Stay alert for similar scenarios, such as CAPTCHA or “I am not a robot” verifications or fake software or browser updates.
