Course articulation is the process of determining UAB equivalents for the foreign courses you will take abroad. Articulation is an important element of planning your study abroad experience and you should start this process before you go abroad.
Many programs have courses that have been pre-approved for UAB credit. If the course you wish to take has been pre-approved, no additional action is required. However, if you wish to enroll in a course that has not been pre-approved, you will need to complete the steps below:
Course Articulation Process:
Apply for your program with UAB Education Abroad
Initiate your study abroad application with UAB Education Abroad.
Attend the Course Articulation Workshop
Learn how to initiate the course articulation process through an in-person or virtual session. Workshop dates can be found on the UAB events calendar.
Submit your Course Approval Requests
Within your Education Abroad application, submit approval requests for any courses that have not been pre-approved for UAB credit.
Course approval requests must be reviewed by designated UAB departmental approvers. This process can take up to one month per course.
We highly recommend starting the articulation process early to ensure that your academic plan is in place before you go abroad. You can schedule an appointment with a Peer Ambassadors to talk through the process once you have started an application for a study abroad program. Additionally, the Education Abroad Advisor is happy to meet with students to discuss course selection in detail.
School of Education and Human Sciences Courses
Any education course(s) taken outside of the state of Alabama will transfer back as general elective credit. Students are strongly advised to speak with their School of Education and Human Sciences Advisor before studying abroad to identify alternative courses they can take during a study abroad program or seek an appeals process with the state of Alabama Board of Education.
