For UAB undergraduate student Carlyn Smart, studying abroad was an opportunity to explore new cultures, experience life in another country and step outside her comfort zone. During a two-week program at King’s College London through WorldStrides, a UAB-affiliated provider, Smart discovered that some of the most meaningful experiences came from simply exploring the city and embracing everyday life abroad.
From wandering London's streets to discovering new foods and perspectives, her experience helped her recognize the connections that bring people together across cultures.
What inspired you to study abroad?
I have wanted to study abroad for awhile, because I’ve always had a passion for exploring other cultures. It seemed like my sophomore year was the perfect time for me to study abroad, so I took the leap and applied.
What were you most excited or nervous about before leaving?
I was most excited about exploring London, but I was also nervous about what the course would look like. It was different, but easy to adjust to, so once I got used to it, I wasn’t as worried.
What was your most memorable experience while abroad?
I think my most memorable moments were spent walking through London without much of a destination in mind. It helps you get to know the city, and fully immerse yourself in the study abroad experience.
What surprised you most about living in another country?
I never expected the food to be so different. It actually tastes a lot fresher, and I thoroughly enjoyed every meal I had.
How did your experience change the way you view other cultures and the world?
I think living in another country has actually made me realize how similar we all are. Of course, there are many differences across cultures, but all in all, we are just people. There are some traits of humanity that bridge cultures, and I think that’s beautiful.
What advice would you give another UAB student considering studying abroad?
The biggest piece of advice I have is not to worry too much. The Education Abroad Office at UAB will help you every step of the way, and if you are using an affiliate provider, you will also have that extra layer of support.
