Drs. McClintock and Marion have contributed significantly to the Education Abroad efforts at UAB, providing students with opportunities to study and observe unique ecosystems of the world.
They have together facilitated faculty-led study abroad programs to the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, and the Bahamas. Their most recent program to the Bahamas in the summer of 2022 included 15 students who got a firsthand look at the environmental factors that influence Caribbean Island ecosystems and habitats. At the Gerace Research Centre on San Salvador, Bahamas, students toured major island ecosystems, snorkeled coral reefs and grass flats, and explored bush forest flora and fauna to observe how plants and animals have evolved to xeric inland habitats and salt marine environments.
In addition to the many programs led in partnership with Dr. Marion, Dr. McClintock has also led marine biology-focused programs to Antarctica. In Antarctica, students visited Palmer Station on Anvers Island, sailed the Drake Passage, and observed wildlife, icebergs, volcanoes, and historic sites in the South Shetlands. Through this program, Dr. McClintock shared with students his expertise on the ecological impacts of climate change and ocean acidification on marine life of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Drs. McClintock and Marion have been recognized with the Provost Award for Faculty Excellence in Education Abroad programming for developing high-impact education abroad programs that provide students with unique opportunities to study and observe ecosystems of the world.
