Dr. Lisa McCormick and Meena Nabavi continually develop and facilitate high-quality programs that support and promote Education Abroad at UAB and provide students with opportunities to study and observe public health issues across the globe.

In summer 2019, they coordinated and led a faculty-led study abroad program that focused on population health in Panama. During the program, 13 students visited historically and culturally significant sites, urban and rural communities, and community-based organizations to learn about both historical and contemporary public health issues and their effects on population health. Students also visited public health and healthcare agencies to learn about their structures and approaches to addressing issues of public health. Through the experience, students gained a deeper understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of public health practice and the need to add attention to the social determinants of health in order to advance health equity.

Dr. Lisa McCormick and Meena Nabavi have been recognized with the Provost Award for Faculty Excellence in Education Abroad programming for developing high-quality education abroad programs that support students in their exploration of population health around the world.
