
UAB’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) has designed a workshop for Laboratory Managers, Supervisors and Science Educators that will offer an in-depth review of:
- laboratory safety practices
- UAB Policies and Procedures
- regulatory compliance
- incident response
After this workshop, you will be able to:
- Conduct risk assessments to identify appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), laboratory equipment, and emergency response measures for working with biological materials and hazardous chemicals.
- Properly handle, package, and dispose of biological waste.
- Use the Environmental Health and Safety Assistant (EHSA) to manifest hazardous waste.
- Use EHSA to accurately maintain and update the laboratory’s chemical inventory.
- Establish and maintain a compliant Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA).
- Develop essential safety documentation—including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), a Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), and a Lab Safety Plan—to ensure readiness for safety inspections and reviews.

- Chemical Safety (CS101)
- Hazardous Waste Handling and Packing (CS055)
- Medical Waste Management for Labs (BIO301L)
- Using PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in the Laboratory
- Biosafety Cabinets and Fume Hoods (BIO304)
