About the Program

You can make a big impact on your community's health by understanding its cultural, social, and psychological influencers. With a PhD in Medical Sociology, you'll be prepared for a career as a leader in education, research, public health, and more.

In fact, our program dives deep into the issues you'll run into every day of your career: sociology, public health, medicine—you name it. We want you to be able to meet those challenges head on. That's why our program is so rigorous. For instance, you’ll learn to design and conduct research contributing to our understanding of health, medical sociology, and health care delivery systems. Plus, in addition to your coursework and research, you'll teach at least one undergraduate course in the Department of Sociology. Finally, you’ll undergo a comprehensive examination and then, through your dissertation, develop a specialty such as aging and health, health behaviors, health and family, or community health, which will help solidify your expertise and could make you even more marketable.
