About the Program

Explore the frontiers of civil engineering through UAB’s PhD program — from designing resilient bridges, envisioning sustainable infrastructure, advancing transportation systems, optimizing freight systems, innovating construction management, or solving complex environmental challenges. Our strong focus on sustainability empowers students to tackle pressing real-world problems while upholding the safety and well-being of their communities and shaping a more resilient and sustainable future for society.

Your PhD in Civil Engineering journey begins with a personalized mentorship. Together with your advisor and graduate committee, you’ll craft a research path aligned with your professional aspirations - whether in structural, transportation, construction, or environmental engineering. The curriculum will help you gain foundational skillsets such as data and systems analysis, artificial intelligence and machine learning, remote sensing, proposal and research development. You will also take advanced courses to develop specialized expertise in your areas of interest. A select number of qualifying students will be considered for Graduate Research Assistantships or Teaching Assistantships, which are based on merit and availability of funds.

The UAB PhD program in Civil Engineering will help prepare you for a career in academia, advanced research, and leadership in infrastructure development, transportation systems, environmental protection, or construction management.
