The UAB Pediatric Residency training programs take advantage of the cooperation of three main entities to provide exceptional training opportunities to our residents.
The faculty of the Department of Pediatrics provides a diverse and extensive spectrum of medical expertise and health care services, from primary care to subspecialty services. Over the past five years the department has experienced significant growth in the number of full-time medical pediatric faculty. Currently there are over 100 full-time faculty in general pediatrics and subspecialty divisions.
The faculty of the Department of Pediatrics records more than 160,000 outpatient visits, including approximately 50,000 patients seen through the pediatric emergency medicine division. More than 9,800 subspecialty patients and general pediatric inpatient admissions were managed by the pediatric faculty. In addition, the Neonatology division provides coverage for the UAB Medical Center as well as four private, not-for-profit community hospitals. Total inpatient days are in excess of 74,000.
The Department of Pediatrics has a major commitment to research and consistently ranks in the top 20 among all departments of pediatrics in the country in NIH funding. Through research, we are contributing to a better understanding of the causes of many life-threatening diseases as well as advancing many new forms of treatment.
- US News & World Report ranked UAB Department of Pediatrics in the top 20 of America’s Best Graduate Schools for 2007. The department has been in the top 20 for a number of years.
- In rankings released in 2005 and 2006, the UAB Department of Pediatrics ranked #3 in 2004 and #7 in 2005 in NIH funding in Pediatrics.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham is the sponsoring institution for graduate medical education. The UAB Health System is world-renowned for education, research, patient care and innovation. UAB Hospital is a 900+ bed state-of-the-art facility dedicated to top quality medical care. Pediatric residents rotate at UAB Hospital for several training opportunities.
Truly exceptional Pediatric residency programs need a free-standing Children’s Hospital to provide pediatric-specific, dedicated training and patient care. The Children’s Hospital of Alabama, adjacent to the UAB Hospital Complex is a 300 bed Children’s facility, serving as a resource to the entire state and region. The Pediatric Residency is housed at the Children’s Hospital and a majority of training rotations are at the Children’s Hospital.
